Irish Federation

The Irish Federation

A peaceful union of Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland would benefit both countries greatly, both  economically and socially. A union of peers would provide greater oversight to the workings of the Dail, while stimulating both democracies.

Benefits

As a federation we could pool our resources and achieve economies of scale while attracting more inward investment.

Proposal for the Establishment of an Irish Federation

The following is a proposal through which this could be achieved:

1. Review of the role of the Senate.

2. Continuance of the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

3. Continuance of the Dail & the NI Assembly as presently constituted.

4. The establishment of a wholly elected National Parliament incorporating the North-South Good Friday bodies with representation from all 32 counties.

5. The establishment of an Irish Federation with one President, 2 states and political duality in Northern Ireland.

6. Ratification on a 5 yearly basis for both states whereby the new arrangements can be dissolved by either state, thus reverting to the constitutional position prior to agreement.

Quid Pro Quo

As part of a federation agreement, the southern government should give its support to the union between Britain & Northern Ireland in exchange for a united front by NI Westminster MP’s in the British parliament on all matters relating to the security and well being of Ireland, as expressed by the Irish Federation.

If it were not for the fact that Northern Ireland enjoys a separate economic & political system there would be less opportunity to critically evaluate our own badly in need of repair fledgling democracy. On a more practical side Tesco would not be reducing its prices by an average of 22% along border counties.
